In the following book* we have given an account of plastic flow and fracture in solids, based to a large extent on work which has been done over the last five years on the growth and decay of discontinuities in continuous media. We believe that this book will be suitable for a course at the graduate level for students of applied mathematics and engineering whose interest is in the mechanics of solids. A convenient source of reference to the basic results in tensor analysis and differential geometry, which we have presupposed, is offered by our recent survey Concepts from Tensor Analysis and Diferential Geometry, Volume 1 of this Series. Specific references to this survey have been made when it was felt that such references might be helpful to the reader.
